Over 1 billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Diarrhea is a leading cause of death among children under the age of five in the developing world. Globally it is the second leading killer of infants, and according to UNICEF kills approximately 1.5 million people per year. This is directly linked to the lack of proper sanitation and clean water.
Biosand Filtration is an appropriate technology which can deliver sustainable access to safe drinking water at the household level reliably for astonishingly little cost.
Features of the Biosand Filter:
- – unit cost ranging between 25- 50USD
- – depending on quality of production, lifespan can exceed 10- 20 years
- – if taught correctly maintenance is done by the user
- – can produce 1 liter of water every 100 seconds
We’re currently working to implement Biosand Filtration in and around the Macuelizo Valley, Santa Barbara, Honduras, Central America. Currently the focus is to install them at schools to complement vitamin and deworming programs, school gardens, and hygiene education curricula.
Everyone should have clean water.
